Moai statues are carvings made from stone that resemble humans, the heads are much larger than the body with an impressive attention to detail. They are located in Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, and are believed to have been created around 1250-1500.
Their existance is the source of enthusiasm that surrounds Chile, and their are many debates over their purpose and transportation (considering each would weigh around 60 tons).
The statues were first discovered in 1722 by Jacob Roggeveeu, and from this point the interest from the outisde world has constantly increased. they have stong facial characteristics with prominent noses and many had coralfor eyes. Though this wasn't completed on mnay of them.
Their preservation is a priority to the residents of Chile and you are restricted visiting them to how close you can get.
